WINDOWS DESKTOP APPLICATIONS
A desktop application runs on a workstation and provides
a rich and interactive user interface. Data can reside on a fileserver (e.g.
in an Access database) or on a dedicated database server (e.g. SQLServer),
or even on the internet. Aztec uses Microsoft Access and Visual Basic, both
of which provide sophisticated and powerful tools for creating desktop applications.
BROWSER BASED APPLICATIONS
Aztec uses Microsoft's Active Server Pages technology to
create database driven internet/intranet applications similar to windows desktop
applications, but running in a web browser. While the user interface might
not be as rich or interactive, application deployment and support is much
easier since users do not require any custom software on their desktops, just
their web browser.
WEB SERVICES
The Internet is evolving into a more distributed and integrated
environment. Web servers have long provided content in web pages, but increasingly
they can now process and provide data to other servers or desktop applications.
This allows businesses to share data, integrate processes and offer more comprehensive
services to their customers. Web Services are server-based components that
encapsulate business processes, manipulate external data and are accessible
over the Internet via an XML interface.
MOBILE SOFTWARE
Handheld computers allow organisations to provide mobile workers
with data capture applications and access to corporate data while out of the
office. At Aztec we have focused on the PocketPC platform. Mobile applications
are developed using the familiar Visual Studio toolset, and data can be managed
on the handheld using a powerful slimmed-down version of SQLServer.
